Yeah, it's pretty wild how we can remember the story wrong like that. I read through the Pentateuch in the Fall and was surprised at how much I didn't have right.

I probably need to do it again.

I took your lead and wrote out Psalm 24 today in my prayer time. It's good to do. Thanks for the, uh, motivation?

so curious why some more seemingly mundane events like these get such detail, and others get less.

i wonder if isaac was freaking out or not. he was tied up - was he writhing? was he silent? was he screaming? what did those two servants think of all this?

talk about life-altering, scarring situations. does isaac think his dad is nuts? is he mentally abused? Or does he see his dad as obedient, and God as faithful?

I can't imagine NOT getting untied and running as far as I can from my father...but perhaps isaac had much more faith than I

Abimelech does seem like the better of the two men but like you alluded to, it's not the better amongst the bad that receives God's favor.

On Chapter 21 - I often wonder why God spares the repeated sin of some and not others. And how Abraham could be this situation: "no matter what you do, God is on your side"...then I realized, that's exactly the situation I'm in with God.

and how amazing is Abimelech? Seems like a really good guy. peace-loving, level-headed. I like him.

agreed. bizarre.

I'm also struck with the fact that so many people are willing to negotiate with God/angels...and it works! Abraham negotiated, asked, pushed. Same here. Lot was given instruction to go to the mountains and he said "well i'd rather go over there" and the angels agreed. What are the implications for us? Can/should we push back on what God asks? What would life for Lot be like if he had done what the angels originally suggested? I'm really surprised how God and the angels relent upon request.

I'm also confused about God visiting Abraham in this way. Did he take on human flesh here? What does this mean when thinking about Christ - being God incarnate. Is it similar or different?

When I read it was three visitors, my american christian upbringing assumed it was the trinity. Perhaps it was? Perhaps it was God with two angels?

Either way I hate that these super-bizarre happenings are described in so little detail....

Interesting that God's promise is to “never again kill off every living thing” and NOT ‘never again will I kill off every human’. I wonder if there were Sodomites familiar with the story of the flood musing the similarity of their demise. That's not likely, but perhaps Abraham and Lot saw the similarities. That's probably a good part of the reason Lot was so sure to run, and Abraham so quick to protest God's plans for destruction.

I think God definitely heard Abraham's concern about justice and the destruction of Sodom. But Abraham's high and generous count of 10 was still more than the city could show, so I'm not sure that God was really yielding to Abraham's point. Rather, I think God knew Abraham had those doubts and gave him space to voice them beforehand rather than afterwards, where they could have lingered unresolved.
